From his early years as a member of Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop, through his time as a trailblazing academic and director, to his selfless work helping those less advantaged engage with the arts, Barker inspired and influenced a generation of theatre-makers.
Looking beyond his untimely death in 2005, this collection of essays explores the multi-disciplinary work of this great man, examining his early experience with productions like Shelagh Delaney’s The Lion in Love to the publication of his seminal book, Theatre Games. More than just situating Barker within an international context, each essay in this book is written by a contributor with a personal connection to him: either as a collaborator in the theatre, a professional colleague in training or academia, or as a student of his work.
